And it&#8217;s free!<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/pere-lachaise-the-real-finale-to-Les-Mis-adjusted-resized1.jpg\" width=\"484\" height=\"362\" \/>Sometimes there is a discrepancy between art and life. The grand romantic musical Les Miz and what Victor Hugo wrote and the truly tragic end of youthful ideals. The noble youths struggle to be heard and the reality of a stone wall. \u00a0In a place full of monuments, this wall serves both as a monument to a movement and a really practical grave marker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/pere-lachaise-weeping-woman-2-cropped-and-contrasted-210x300.jpg\" width=\"168\" height=\"240\" \/>It is where the remainder of those noble youth from the chorus of the miserables were rounded up for their curtain call in front of an\u00a0impromptu\u00a0firing squad. \u00a0And were buried where they fell. Much as I loved the show, this is where the curtain really came down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">Welcome to Pere LaChaise cemetery, the third most exclusive piece of final resting real estate in Paris.\u00a0 The first is, of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musee-armee.fr\/en\/collections\/museum-spaces\/dome-des-invalides-tomb-of-napoleon-i.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Napoleon&#8217;s<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800080;\">Tomb<\/span> <\/a>and the second\u00a0is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacred-destinations.com\/france\/paris-pantheon\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The Pantheon\u00a0<\/span><\/a> (where Victor Hugo currently resides).<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">Most folk of our ggggeneration (stutter deliberate&#8230;&#8217;cause I&#8217;m a Who fan, that&#8217;s why) come here to find the grave of Jim\u00a0Morrison, first bad boy of rock and roll.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/pere-lachaise-on-the-trail-of-Jim-Morrison-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">It\u2019s out of the way but simply follow the trail of whiskey bottles and marijuana cigarettes. No, I&#8217;m not that old but writing &#8220;joints&#8221; in regard to Jim without some qualifier is asking for trouble. Go ahead, I&#8217;ll wait while you ask your parents about him or you can read through the Rolling Stone\u2019s account of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/news\/jim-morrison-s-indecency-arrest-rolling-stone-s-original-coverage-20101210\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;The Miami Incident&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\"><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">How Jim finally got into Pere Lachaise illustrates a lot about the cemetery\u00a0itself\u00a0and why he is in such a hard to find spot. When his friends tried to fulfill\u00a0Jim\u2019s\u00a0wish to be buried here they were told, \u00a0&#8220;only artists, writers and poets&#8221; are allowed in\/under. \u00a0Unless \u00a0you happen to be incredibly rich, politically influential and\/or French royalty, then they will make an exception, <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/pere-lachaise-Jim-from-the-other-side-resized1-300x225.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/>just this once.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">So his friends said, &#8220;Oh, didn&#8217;t we say, um, ah, he was a poet too?&#8221; and, with gallic reluctance, the minimum of room was found for him.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">There are reasons, however, for the reluctance to have any Jimmy come lately crash the gates. This is the sacred ground that contains <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moli%C3%A8re\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Moliere<\/span><\/a>, after all. On which rests the divine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahbernhardt.com\/bio.html\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Sarah Bernhardt<\/span><\/a> (the original one, French actress and national treasure). And cradles the little sparrow, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89dith_Piaf\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Edith Piaf<\/span><\/a>, who kept the soul of the nation alive during the darkest hours of WWII.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">Near one of the main boulevard entrances is a monument to the civilian soldiers of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylearningsite.co.uk\/french_resistance.htm\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">French\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Resistance-cest-ne-pas-futile-resized-208x300.jpg\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" \/>Resistance<\/span><\/a> who died in service of their country and lie in unmarked graves courtesy of the occupiers. \u00a0It\u2019s popular to make jokes about the cowardice of them Frenchies, how they\u2019ll lay down their arms to surrender at the first sign of a fight. Next time, think of this jaunty fellow on his way to mess up the occupation in some way and get severely messed up by the Gestapo in return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gauloises\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Gauloises<\/span><\/a> anyone?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">Further along is a monument covered with kisses&#8211;it is the custom to apply lipstick and then apply un bisou upon the monument to Mr. Oscar Wilde. I await correction here by my friends much more\u00a0knowledgeable in <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/pere-lachaise-Oscar-Wilde-cropped-with-contrast-267x300.jpg\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" \/>the other official language of Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">While in the neighborhood of Mr. Wilde, one must also pay respects to the great writer and American ex-patriate, \u00a0Miss Gertrude Stein. She is sharing the earth and eternity with her partner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.straightdope.com\/columns\/read\/880\/alice-b-toklas-brownies-the-recipe\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">brownie fame<\/span><\/a>, Alice B. Toklas. \u00a0Ms. Stein gets top billing with Alice&#8217;s name quietly shaded on the back&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">If you are interested in one of the best, witty, quirky, just plain wonderful\u00a0books ever written about Pere LeChaise (or any cemetery, for that matter) and the after life stories of the permanent residents, find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/programguide\/personality\/bill_richardson\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Bill Richardson&#8217;s<\/span><\/a> delightful book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Waiting-Gertrude-Graveyard-Bill-Richardson\/dp\/0312318685\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1303180789&amp;sr=1-2\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Waiting for Gertrude.\u00a0<\/span><\/a> Really, try to find it, you won&#8217;t be sorry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Corben, cursive; color: #800080;\">It took a little persuading to get my beloved to come along for this walking tour. Understandable, what with our Paris time limited, so we set aside a precious afternoon to humour my weird passion for graveyards.
